Liquid is the versatile default — it doubles as a pre-treater and dissolves in any temperature. Pods are the most convenient and impossible to overdose, but cost more per load. Powder is the budget champion for heavily soiled loads. Detergent sheets save space and plastic but can struggle with tough stains.
High-efficiency (HE) washers need low-sudsing HE-rated formulas — regular detergent in an HE machine leaves residue and can trip extra rinse cycles. Nearly all modern detergents are HE-rated, but check the logo before buying in bulk.
Free-and-clear formulas skip dyes and perfumes, not cleaning power. They are the right default for babies, sensitive skin and eczema. If you love scented laundry, it is gentler to use a free detergent plus a scent booster you control than a heavily perfumed formula.
Enzyme blends (protease, amylase, lipase) genuinely dissolve protein, starch and grease stains. Cold-water formulas save real money on energy. Concentrated bottles cut plastic and shelf space.
"Ultra power," fancy fragrances and color-protection marketing rarely earn their premium. Dosing correctly — usually half of what the cap suggests for average loads — improves results more than switching brands.
